Serotonin, in turn, is a precursor to melatonin. Melatonin is known to help shorten the time to fall asleep. The 5-HTP, intended for natural product use, is made from the seeds of the inflorescences of the Griffonia simplicifolia shrub, which grows in West and Central Africa. Shrub seeds are rich in 5-HTP.

Benefits of 5-HTP
The effects of 5-HTP are based on chemical reactions in the brain. As the intake of 5-HTP is increased, the amount of serotonin in the brain increases at the same time. Serotonin contributes to the regulation of human mood and behavior, and the effects may be positively reflected in improvements in, for example, sleep, mood, anxiety, depression, and sexual desire. Based on the experience of some users, feelings of pain states may also decrease. Some studies have found that 5-HTP may be an effective and efficient alternative to some antidepressants in the treatment of depression.

Dosage of 5-HTP
In most studies of the effects of 5-HTP, the daily dose has been 200 to 750 mg. Many international recommendations for 5-HTP are 300–500 mg per day, but the manufacturers’ recommendations both in Finland and abroad are often 100 mg per day. The natural wholesaler recommends a dose of 100 to 300 mg (1 to 3 capsules) for continuous use.

5-HTP in the morning or evening?
Should I take 5-HTP in the morning or evening? The duration of action of 5-HTP is relatively short, so a dose of more than 100 mg should be taken twice a day: once in the morning and in the evening. Not recommended for pregnant or breast-feeding women. Concomitant use of 5-HTP with antidepressants or hypnotics is not recommended.
